Why Should We Meditate & What Exactly Is It?

You may have heard lots of information around the benefits of Meditation and that it has massive positive effects on your wellbeing and Mental Health. But what exactly is meditation? and why should you bring meditation into your daily life?

I personally think mediation is amazing for just being able to still the mind and take 5,10 or 20 mins out of your day for complete stillness and awareness to your mind and well as your health and well-being. There are studies which say it helps you cope with stress and anxiety along with improving pain tolerance and increasing mood.

Here are 8 of my personal opinions why you should meditate, some of these may not work for everyone and you will experience different benefits of mediation as we are all different but i want to share what meditation has done for me personally.

1) Reduce Anxiety

I can’t say that anxiety will go away once you start mediation, but it certainly helps. If I have felt anxious at all I will turn to mediation and allow my-self at least 20mins of quiet time to allow myself to reconnect and slow everything down using my breath and most importantly allow my mind to become clear again, this also slows my heart down. Which in turn gives a ‘relaxed response’ to my body and stops the chaos of worry/thoughts.

2) Improved concentration

As I am a creative person, I feel sometimes my mind can be blocked by so much in my brain so many ideas, thoughts it's constantly thinking about the next thing. So, mediation allows me to re-focus and bring all those creative thoughts in to more of a manageable state which in turn makes me productive.

3) Less bothered about the things that can upset you

I think this is a hard one as so many things can make us worried or upset about little things happening in our everyday lives, from social media (yes this is a massive mental health impact to so many people), to working environments to family and friends.

I feel that once I have done my meditation, I feel I can detach and focus more on the here and now so the present moment not worrying about the “what ifs”.

4) Better night sleep

Wow!!! this is something that I have so much trouble with, lying awake most nights and not allowing to be still with just a million things running through my head thinking about the next day or what happened during the day etc... Meditation certainly helps this especially if you mediate before bed, it really puts your brain in to a sense of relaxation so your more focused and ready to rest for sleep as the meditation helps lower your blood levels which again helps de-stress you and relaxes your body inside and out.

5) You become more mindful and aware

This is something I feel most connected to which mediation helps with, I feel much more aware of my thoughts and actions. It helps me to reflect and focus on my breathing connecting with my body and feeling how amazing just breathing really is. This help me through my everyday life.

6) More control over my emotions

I like to think in general everyday I am a happy bubbly person and love to show my happiness to everyone, but like all people I bad days and may feel angry, annoyed and upset or experience sadness. Meditation helps you deal with these emotions believe it or not…

7) Overall health and being

For me mediation helps keep my body and mind in check, I understand my body more than ever and know when I need to rest it or when I need look after myself if I’m feeling low or unwell. It helps me gain more awareness to myself which I think is pretty awesome. When you balance this out with yoga and eating well it can have massive effects on the overall health of your body and mind.

8) Trying something - NEW IT'S FREE!

I never thought I could ever mediate with my mind constantly thinking about the next thing after the next thing I just never thought I could ever sit in stillness for even 10mins let alone 20mins. But it's just amazing how simply connecting and bringing focus to yourself how-ever length of time can do amazing things and trying something new isn’t that scary. Plus, it's FREE to meditate just siting and focusing on your breath is mediating and you can do this anywhere from your living room to your garden or on holiday.

Why not have a go at your own Meditation - here is a Meditation based around the Heart Charka which i filmed for my 7 day Chakra challenge last week.
