Why Yoga? My Yoga Journey So Far…

Updated: Mar 24, 2019

The moment i fell in love with yoga

From the moment I first stepped foot on my yoga mat, something truly amazing happened to my mind and body.

The first sign was an overwhelming calmness… my mind was still… this never happens especially with an anxious, creative mind constantly moving and thinking about the next thing.

The second sign, the pain in my lower back had vanished, I woke up the next day feeling like a totally different person. Confident, strong, calm, less anxious and most of all full of energy. I also had the best night sleep for a long time.

This for me was when the ‘magic happened’, I fell in love with yoga…

After around 2-3 years of practicing yoga, I started to really connect on a much deeper level within my body and mind. Building strength, toning my body inside and also the hardest part... connecting my breath and movement. I realised I wanted to be a yoga teacher, I wanted to share the benefits yoga has done for me with people who would benefit from practising yoga.

I went to Greece for 2 weeks back in May 2017 and there I started to develop yoga and teaching on a whole different level. It was the scariest, most incredible life changing and rewarding experience of my life. Along with being with some of the most inspiring and kindest people I have ever met. A group of dedicated Yogis with hearts of gold never judging you never questioning you just accepting you for who you are. We supported each other during the 2 weeks, we cried and laughed together while training and learning about the true meaning of yoga.

There were days that I felt totally out of my comfort zone and had no confidence what so ever, learning the yoga sanskrit language and trying to remember a long yoga sequence was so challenging. The days I would struggle and question am I doing the right thing?... breaking down in tears while coming to terms with emotions that I suffer from anxiety while struggling with being dyslexic.

Could I ever teach???....

But in my head, I knew I was doing the right thing, I kept thinking back to the first day I practiced yoga and how passionately I wanted to share yoga with more people.

When I officially completed my Yoga course in July 2017, I found a small room to hire, where it would fit around 8 people in and i started to put my own classes on for free. This class was just for friends and family to help build my confidence and learn to teach. I was the most nervous and scared ever but I will always remember my first class and how proud I was to be sharing what I learnt with everyone.

That was just the start of something amazing as my classes grew and I took the plunge and hired a larger space that fitted 18 people. This is where I truly gained real confidence and knowledge understanding people’s conditions, abilities, planning new sequences which align correctly with the body and being able to adjust asanas to suit different needs. This was so challenging while talking in front of people, arghhh so scary, butterfly’s in my belly each time I taught. All this while juggling a full-time job.

I had good weeks and bad weeks where I was teaching sometimes only 3 people…. but I continued to stay patient (which yoga teaches you to be) and did not give up… my confidence grew and I developed and designed my yoga business name, made a logo and created a website. I’m so proud to say that hard work pays off, I now hire such a beautiful studio space and share yoga with more new yogis each week, having a room filled with smiles after their Savasana just makes teaching yoga totally worth it, along with comments about how good people feel after.

My passion and love for helping people is the best feeling in the world and by doing this through yoga makes me so happy.

My yoga journey as a teacher is still continuing, YES IT IS HARD WORK, but I’m still learning practicing patience, while building on my knowledge of yoga, but most of all so so so grateful that i've been given the chance to teach.

If you think yoga is just about stretching and being able to touch your toes think again…it’s so much more than that and until you experienced it please don’t judge it...

So why not try it?...
